IRS and Publisher's Clearinghouse SCAM Alert

Date:
03/17/2017

We have been getting more calls regarding scams from IRS and Publishers Clearing House.

IRS:  They leave a message stating they are the IRS and that they owe money and if they don’t receive a payment a warrant will go out for their arrest. They leave a number for them to return the call.  They have rec’d more than one call from them.

IRS will not notify people this way.  Here are tips from the IRS:

Todd Thompson says, “The IRS will never call on money being owed or tell you about a warrant.   Please report these issues to the “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page. You can also call 800-366-4484.

Publisher’s Clearing House:  They are told they have won some money but before they can collect it they need to go to Walmart and send them $200.

They did not get any more details because they did not call them back.

He was upset that these people can continue to call with these scams.

Todd Thompson said, “Publisher’s Clearing House will not ask you to submit a payment.  You must have entered the clearing house sweepstakes.  If you can’t recall if you have, you can call this toll free number: Call 1-877-3SWEEPS (1-877-379-3377) Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to check if you've really won.  If not, please report this information to law enforcement.”

The County Attorney’s office is not responsible for investigations in this matter.
